چکیده

Background: High-resolution CT (HRCT) of the temporal bone is the method of choice for making the diagnosis, knowing the extent of disease and planning the treatment. Early appreciation of the disease is important to implement a surgical procedure to save the patient from loss of hearing and to prevent critical intracranial complications. The present research has been undertaken to study the role of High Resolution Computed Tomography (HRCT) of temporal bone as a diagnostic modality in COM. Methods: This is a prospective study done in Teerthanker Mahaveer Medical College for duration of one year. The study was conducted on fifty patients who had positive history of chronic otitis media (COM). All the patients underwent HRCT scans in department of Radiology and then the surgical intervention was done. Both the radiological and surgical findings were tabulated and correlated with each other. False positive, false negative, sensitivity, specificity and P value were calculated. The level of significance was considered significant for P-value <0.05. Results: Certain findings like mesotympanum, epitympanum, hypotympanum, perilabyrinthine cells, mastoid air cells, tegmen tympani involvement and intra-cranial involvement showed 100% sensitivity. The perilabyrinthine cells, mastoid air cells involvement, stapes erosion, tegmen tympani erosion, mastoiditis and intracranial complication showed 100% specificity. Conclusion: HRCT of temporal bone is a reliable investigation in preoperative evaluation of chronic otitis media and its complications except for facial canal dehiscence.

Evaluation of Temporal Bone Cholesteatoma and the Correlation Between High Resolution Computed Tomography and Surgical Finding

BACKGROUND Acquired cholesteatomas are commonly seen in patients less than 30 years. There is a typical history of recurrent middle ear infections with tympanic membrane perforation. The diagnosis of cholesteatoma is usually made on otologic examination. OBJECTIVE The aim of the work was to study the role of high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) in detecting, evaluating, and diagnosing m...

Metastatic Adenocarcinoma of Temporal Bone with Collet-Sicard Syndrome

Introduction: Metastatic tumors of the temporal bone are extremely rare. Collet-Sicard syndrome is an uncommon condition characterized by unilateral palsy of the lower four cranial nerves. The clinical features of temporal bone metastasis are nonspecific and mimic infections such as chronic otitis media and mastoiditis.   Case Report: This report describes a rare case of metastatic adenocarcino...

Comparison of Preoperative Temporal Bone CT with Intraoperative Findings in Patients with Cholesteatoma

Introduction: Cholesteatoma is traditionally diagnosed by otoscopic examination and treated by surgery. The necessity for imaging in an uncomplicated case is controversial. This study was planned to investigate the usefulness of a preoperative high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scan in depicting the status of middle ear structures in the presence of cholesteatoma and also to compare the...

The Prevalence of Persistent Petrosquamosal Sinus and Other Temporal Bone Anatomical Variations on High-Resolution Temporal Bone Computed Tomography

BACKGROUND The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of petrosquamosal sinus (PSS) and other temporal bone (TB) anatomical variations in various patients using high-resolution computed tomography (CT). MATERIAL AND METHODS We reviewed clinical and consecutively obtained CT data for 276 TBs of 138 patients. The incidence of TB anatomical variations was compared among patients with rad...
